Editor's Note

All too often, our news, social media feeds, and even our conversations with friends and family are centered around anxiety-filling and rage-inducing content. It can be so difficult to believe good things happen every day when the things reported or shared are examples of the worst humanity has to offer.

That’s why we started Real Positive Vibes. We wanted to create a haven inside your inbox to share some good news with you. We hope that while you read our newsletter, you can recharge and feel refreshed.

Positivity in Practice

The Opportunist can prepare for bad and enjoy good at the same time

Despite the benefits, society often tells us that optimism and positivity are signs of weakness, immaturity or inexperience. As a consequence pessimism or realism tend to be the favored perspectives for thinking, viewing life.

The unfortunate consequence of that is being fixated on the downsides of life, we get into the habit of dismissing both the possibility and reality of good things when they happen. Preparation for the storms of life is good thing and it can make weathering them easier but we shouldn't let it overshadow the sunny moments either.

So I want to offer you a new lens, try the opportunist. In the strictest sense an opportunist is often viewed in a negative light, because capitalizing on opportunities can come with a disregard of for the impacts of that pursuit on others. However, I think that we can learn something for this perspective.

The opportunist isn't concerned with how much water is in the glass, half full or empty, they just use the water to its greatest effect by drinking it. They understand that they need to be prepared for success and have a plan to pivot to avoid failure. The opportunist carries sunglasses and an umbrella all the time. Because they stay ready rain doesn't bring despair and sunny days are never wasted.

Enjoying the good moments in life doesn't make you weak or immature, it makes you smart, happier and more prepared to face whatever comes next. Don't wasted the sunshine preparing for the next rain storm. Make time for both.
