Positivity in Practice

What Can You Say Yes To?

When mentoring, I often ask people two questions. First, "What would you do if you weren't afraid?" Second, "What would you do if there were no hindrances in time, talent, and resources?" Often these questions spark deep, enthusiastic, and creative responses surrounding entrepreneurship or philanthropy that solves problems bringing about world-changing goodness.

The way people answer these questions tells me something pivotal about our world. It is not that people do not want to do good; instead, they believe they do not have the time, talent, resources, or power to do good. If that's you, read on. This positivity in practice is about getting empowered to do the world-changing good your heart desires. It begins with changing your mindset.

There are three things you need to do to change your mindset. First, discover your purpose by harnessing your natural born gifts. As yourself, "What comes easy to you that is hard for others?" Next, stir your compassion by finding what you're passionate about. Ask yourself, "What problem can my gift help solve?" Finally, ask yourself, "What can I say yes to do with what I have, no matter how seemingly small?" The size of your time, talent, and resources is not nearly as vital as using them to do good in your community. These three small changes in thinking, by enough people, can change the world we live in for the better.

You can think of doing this as making ripples. Mother Teresa said, "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across waters to create many ripples." From her perspective, she could not do much to change the world. From the world's perspective, she was one of the most impactful spiritual leaders of our modern time. She demonstrated a level of compassion unmatched and remembered worldwide. See how perspective is everything?

In today's language, it's spreading the vibes!

So, please try it. May you find courage, overcome fear, and do good in your community, no matter how small your first act is. May it impact more people than you ever dream it could.

When you do, let us know. We would love to hear from you. We may feature your do good story in one of our future issues.
