Editor's Note

We can all remember a moment in our lives when we were feeling down, undervalued or like we wear carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. And just when we were going to give up, someone, maybe a stranger or a friend, reached out to us in our time of need to encourage and help us.

I encourage you to remember how you felt when someone reached out to help you and take the opportunity to offer the same help and warmth that you’ve received to others. If we all make the time to reach out a helping hand now and then, our world will never be short of bright spots and happy moments.

Positivity in Practice

Listen First, Help Second

My challenge this week is to ask someone in your life how you can help them or brighten their day and listen to what they tell you. I know it sounds odd, but how often do we try to help someone by deciding what problem they have and creating and implementing a solution without speaking to them? I can admit to being guilty of this from time to time myself. If you’re like me, the intent is to lessen the other person’s burden, so the best way to do that is to ask them what they need help it.

So, this week before you try to help someone by giving them what you think they need, ask them first. You may be surprised at the difference between what you planned to do and what they asked for. Don’t worry if what they ask for seems too small or insufficient. Genuinely listening to someone’s needs and directly responding to them will mean so much more than any grand gesture or display you could come up with.

Email us and let us know how it goes. We may feature you in a future issue.

Be A Blessing

Trying to be a blessing to someone in need is what My Sister's Closet of West Michigan, MSCWM, sets out to do. MSCWM is a service of Church Builders Bible Training Center to survivors of domestic violence, former incarceration, or other devastating tragedy to meet the need of one of the three basic needs of survival, clothing. We are in the planning stages with the goal of launching this fall. Find out more and how to volunteer here.

Why I Cut Homeless People's Hair for Free

An amateur boxer Wisdom Oviawe, 22, has been cutting homeless people's hair for free in his spare time. Each month he walks around Nottingham city center with his clippers and chair, offering cuts to those living on the streets. Mr. Oviawe said, "In this life, you have to remember one thing - if you want to be blessed, you have to bless others." So he taught himself how to cut hair by watching videos on YouTube during the lockdown and does what he can to help people in his community.
