Editor's Note

Christmas is in just a few days; I hope that you and your loved ones enjoy spending time together. We can get stuck in the hustle and bustle of preparations and shopping this time of year, and I want to remind you to take this time to spend time with those you care about. When the years go by and we look back on our lives, it is the times we spent together that we remember the most. So make new memories today to treasure and share tomorrow.

Positivity in Practice

Imposter Syndrome

Imposter syndrome can cause us to belittle our efforts all because of perceived perfection in or unrealistic comparison to those we work with. We've all felt like we don't belong in a job or position before. We've all said to ourselves, 'I don't deserve this job,' or 'if I was really good at this, I wouldn't have made that mistake'. We compare ourselves to those in our industry or profession longer than we have and have the benefit of time and experience we don't.

My friend, don't fall for the trap. Whenever that little gremlin whispers in your ear that you aren't good enough, remember these things:

  • You worked hard to get here.
  • Regardless of the journey you all took, you and your peers are in the same place.
  • Your boss or supervisor hired you and values the skills that you bring to the team.
  • You belong right where you are.

Here's your homework: every time you start feeling inadequate, remind yourself of the things mentioned above but be as detailed as possible. Especially when talking about your journey. Acknowledge and celebrate all of the hardships and challenges that you've overcome along the way. Those victories are an integral part of your story, and remembering them will help you in those moments when you aren't sure if you have done enough.

Email us and let us know how it goes. We may feature you in a future issue.
